Apple's "one more thing" on September 9 was iPhone Duo, the company's first folding phone. It is a book-style device with a titanium frame that opens to a 7.6-inch inner OLED, the largest display ever on an iPhone, and closes to a 5.4-inch outer screen. Pre-orders start October 16 at 5 a.m. PT, and it goes on sale October 23 in more than 70 countries.
Design and durability
The hinge uses more than 100 components with a custom torque profile, and Apple claims the phone is thinner than the iPhone Air when fully open. The inner panel has a nano-texture finish that cuts glare and, according to Macworld, minimizes the visible crease. Crucially for a foldable, the Duo carries an IP68 rating, which MacRumors notes is a first for a book-style foldable and something the Galaxy Z Fold 8 does not offer. Two colors are available: Night Sky and Star White.
Cameras and biometrics
Engadget lists a 48MP Dual Fusion rear system with main and ultra-wide cameras plus a 12MP 2x telephoto, a 12MP Center Stage camera on the outer screen, and a retractable 1080p FaceTime camera hidden under the inner display. Video reaches 4K at 120fps with Dolby Vision HDR time-lapse. Face ID is gone; instead Touch ID lives in the side button, and Apple Watch unlock is supported. There is no Action button.
Chip, modem and battery
Inside is the same A20 Pro as the iPhone 18 Pro, paired with Apple's C2 modem. Dual batteries, one per side, deliver up to 31 hours of video on the inner screen, 44 hours on the outer screen, or about 24 hours of mixed use. Only the $79 USB-C Apple Pencil is supported.
Software built for two screens
Apple introduced Duo-specific features: Smart Take, Duo Preview, Kid Cue and Duo FaceTime for group video calls. Storage starts at 256GB for $1,999 and tops out at 2TB for $3,199.
