Meta Connect 2026 kicks off September 23 at the company's Menlo Park campus, with the keynote starting at 4 p.m. Pacific and developer sessions running through September 24. The company says the event will cover "the latest in VR, wearables, metaverse, and AI," but the tease that has everyone talking is a photo Mark Zuckerberg posted of himself holding a pair of glasses with the identifying details scribbled over in blue.
What the tease tells us
Meta's promotional slides included a sunglasses emoji above the words "demos, special guests, AI updates, better wifi," and Zuckerberg told investors on the Q2 earnings call that the company would have more to share about its glasses lineup at Connect. A rumor from earlier this year pointed to Ray-Ban Meta glasses designed for prescription lenses. Meta's current lineup spans audio-only frames, the Ray-Ban Display model with a single-eye screen, and the $300 unbranded Meta Glasses.
Whatever ships, it lands in a category that is on fire. Zuckerberg said earlier this year that daily usage of Meta's smart glasses tripled year over year, and EssilorLuxottica reported 7 million Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta units sold in 2025 alone.
Don't expect a new headset
The headset side is quieter. Reporting ahead of the show says a new standalone Quest is unlikely because Quest 4 has been pushed to 2027, and the Quest 3S is now more than 18 months old. Analysts instead expect some combination of a display-glasses successor, a cheaper display tier, and Meta's neural wristband input.
Privacy pressure is rising
The launch comes after Meta pushed a software update in July that disables the camera on Ray-Ban, Oakley and Meta Glasses if the recording LED has been tampered with, a response to growing misuse and to new rules banning smart glasses from courthouses in New York and Philadelphia. Expect Meta to address that on stage too.
